Carmarthenshire County Council has confirmed traffic inspectors are to visit the site of the Carregaman pedestrian near Ammanford's Wilko store this week in a bid to improve safety "in the short term".

The move follows the latest accident at the crossing last Thursday, which saw a 28-year-old woman taken to hospital with broken bones following a collision with a car.

The crossing, installed in 2008, left pedestrians claiming they were “dicing with death” as they approached the newly built Wilko store.

Soon after, the current zebra crossing was put in place, but anger has continued to simmer amongst and town councillors who are worried for people’s safety.

The crossing has been the cause of numerous injuries and near misses.

“With growing concern over the safety of the crossing, we as a town council have been speaking with Carmarthenshire County Council’s road safety manager for a number of years, calling for improvements,” said Ammanford mayor Andrew Lewis.

“We have made a number of site visits with him and we hope in light of the current incident things will now change – we have called for a pelican crossing, but we will have to see what can be done.”

The site meeting between John McEvoy, the county council’s road safety and traffic manager and the police will take place this week.

Mr McEvoy said that although the whole of the road system around Ammanford was being looked at for improvements of traffic flow and road safety, a meeting would take place this week what improvements were possible in the short term in light of the frequent incidents at the crossing.
