A SELF-TAUGHT Ammanford artist will see her work adorning the walls of the Senedd, in Cardiff, after winning a national competition.

Cara Gibson, from Station Road, Tirydail, was overjoyed to hear that she is one of ten people chosen to exhibit their art at the iconic Cardiff Bay building.

“I heard about the opportunity and decided to submit a presentation,” said Cara.

“I didn’t think I stood a chance, but I am so proud and overwhelmed to be chosen out of so many applicants.

“It’s a dream come true.”

Cara’s Y Ddraig Goch ar Glyder Fach will be at the building from June 10 to 18.

The hard-working single mum’s artwork has also been spotted closer to home.

Her children’s headteacher commissioned Cara to create paintings for the school’s newly decorated foyer.

“Mrs Martin, the head of Ysgol Parcyrhun, asked if I could work on something for this particular area of the building,” said Cara.

“We talked through a few options and I thought of painting the four seasons, something that wouldn’t go out of date and would be part of the school for generations.

“I took the paintings along to the school last week and Mrs Martin was overjoyed with the result,” added Cara, who said she gets all her inspiration from her Welsh roots.

“As a child, my mum bought me lots of Celtic books, plus I love the outdoors and nature.

"I am privileged to live in such a beautiful part of the world — I am surrounded by inspiration.”

Although very busy, Cara has no plans to slow down.

“This year has been very busy for my artwork, and exciting.

"I am still continuing with commissions and my own original pieces.

“Life is brief, and I am so lucky to be able to work from home and do a job I love.”
