MEMBERS of a Towy Valley choir will be joining forces with Swansea City Opera to perform with their touring production of Faust next week.

A select few from Llandeilo Singers have said how “delighted” they are to be taking part in the dark Gothic tale that follows the fortunes of Faust.

“Having enjoyed many years on the Amateur Opera Stage, both in London and Swansea, I am delighted to have the opportunity to take part in an Opera production once more,” said Mildred Griffiths.

The story follows Faust, who is weary of life, and contemplates suicide when he encounters Méphistophélès – the Devil.

Faust agrees to exchange his soul for eternal youth and fulfilment of his hedonistic wishes.

The resulting journey balances romance and temptation and is widely regarded as a magical and tuneful masterpiece, based on Goethe’s dramatic poem Faust, one of the great works of European Literature.

Llandovery vocalist Michael Davies said he has been privileged to sing with male voice choirs, mixed choirs and cerdd dant, but has never had the opportunity to sing with an opera company.

“It will be both challenging and exciting,” said Michael, who will be singing the Soldiers Chorus on stage.

“It has been hard work learning the music and the words in a relatively short time but I am really looking forward to the experience,” he added.

The performance will be a rare opportunity to see Gounod’s finest work, regarded by many as a master class in operatic dramatic structure.

Also taking part from Llandeilo Singers is Charlotte Leadbeater, Steve Brown and Sheila Dallas.

“I am really enjoying our rehearsals with conductor Gordon Kilby, who infuses us with his enthusiasm,” said Charlotte.

Steve Brown added, ”The first opera LP I ever owned was of highlights from Faust, 40 years ago. I've been singing the soldiers' chorus in the shower ever since! “

Sheila Dallas Curtis said, “Cantorion Llandeilo Singers perform a wide range of music, and this opportunity to sing in an opera production has added an exciting dimension.”

The performance will take place at Swansea University’s Taliesin Arts Centre on Thursday, May 28 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available now from the Taliesin box office and also online from their website www.taliesinartscentre.co.uk.

Tickets are priced £20 and £18, with offers available.
