RESCUE dog Floyd, watching his favourite TV programme Flog It, has been crowned winner of the National Pet Month campaign.

Yvonne Rees-Llewellyn, from Ammanford, has been the proud owner of Floyd for seven years after choosing him from Many Tears rescue centre.

“When my husband and I visited the centre we just couldn’t make up our minds which dog to choose, but when we seen Floyd we just couldn’t resist him,” said Yvonne.

“He was just one-year-old when we rescued him and he has been a very important part of the family ever since.”

Like so many rescue dogs Floyd has a very sad tale to tell after being badly treated by his previous owner.

“He was left outside with no food or shelter – when we brought him home it took me six months to get him to come from behind my settee, and another year or so before he would walk on a lead,” said Yvonne.

“He is still scared of everything especially when he goes out, but when he is in the house he is a completely different dog, he is very cheeky and confident.”

Not only did Floyd scoop the top title after owner Yvonne snapped him watching TV but he also managed to bag himself a £10 gift voucher from Ammanford’s Pet Shop.

“I’m so happy he has won,” said Yvonne.

“He really does deserve it – he has gone from having an awful start in life to having his his picture is in the paper it is a great honour.”

But Floyd’s remarkable story of recovery doesn’t stop there – the little pooch has a very rare medical condition called Cushing’s disease.

“Cushing’s is more often seen in older dogs and in smaller breeds of dog and it is very hard to detect,” said Yvonne.

“Some of the more noticeable signs are hair loss, pot-belly, skin diseases, and changes in behaviour – it is very serious if it goes undetected.

“But thankfully Floyd is fine just as long as he takes his medication regularly there is no real reason for concern.”

David, owner of The Pet Shop, said: “I couldn’t be happier that Floyd won he’s a lovely dog.

“I have heard loads of stories about dogs being mistreated its just awful – but Floyd is a real trooper.”
