A 24-year-old who kicked and punched a Betws man more than 40 times during a frenzied attack in an Ammanford street has been jailed for 43 weeks.

Richard Thomas Williams, of Ysguborwen Farm, Bancffosfelin, admitted affray after CCTV footage showed him assaulting Rhodri Wyn Llewelyn during the incident on October 26.

Llewelyn, of 81b Ffordd Y Glower, also pleaded guilty to affray and was jailed for 14 weeks – suspended for 12 months – with footage showing him punching Laura Coelho in the face “three or four times”.

The 22-year-old single mum, of 14 Bond Avenue in Llanelli, was also jailed – for 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months – for her part, which saw her punching Llewelyn in the face, breaking her arm in the process.

Ceri John Evans, of 60 Wind Street in Ammanford, and 18-year-old Aaron Coelho, of 9 Heol Gwendrath in Burry Port but formerly of the Square pub, also received suspended jail terms for their part in the incident.

The footage showed an intoxicated Llewelyn, 24, and a friend, walking past The Square pub on Wind Street, banging on the window.

A short time later, Williams and several others left the pub and pursued Llewelyn and his friend around the corner where an argument broke-out.

Llewelyn was seen holding up his fists and jumping from side-to-side.

Violence exploded when Llewelyn repeatedly punched Laura Coelho in the face.

Llewelyn was then knocked to the floor by her Coelho’s brother Aaron, at which point Laura Coelho attacked Llewelyn.

While Llewelyn was on the ground, 33-year-old Evans joined the attack while Williams subjected him to “a vicious and frenzied beating”.

David Williams, defending, told the court that Williams, Evans and Laura Coelho were all very sorry for their actions.

Gareth Jones, defending Aaron Coelho, said the teen had suffered from depression since the incident.

“He is a naive 18-year-old and did not think about what he was doing – but he reacted in a violent manner when he saw his sister being punched,” said Mr Jones.

Peter Rees-Jones, defending Llewelyn, said the full-time fabricator accepted striking Laura Coelho.

“He knows it was totally unacceptable and that he was completely out of order.”

District Judge David Parsons said: “All of you could have walked away from this incident at anytime – but you chose not to.

“When dealing with you all I have to take into consideration public safety – I have to protect the public from people like you, especially Williams as you subjected Llewellyn to a violent and frenzied attack.”

Williams was jailed for 26 weeks for affray with an additional 17 weeks behind bars consecutively for breaching an ongoing suspended sentence.

Llewelyn was sentenced to 14 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 80 hours unpaid work.

Laura Coelho was sentenced to 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 60 hours work.

Evans was sentenced to 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months, ordered to complete 100 hours unpaid work.

Aaron Coelho was sentenced to 12 week in a youth detention centre suspended for 12 months and complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

All five were ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge with Laura and Aaron Coelho, Evans and Llewelyn also each ordered to pay £85 costs.
