A Brynaman dance adjudicator said she was “thrilled to bits” to have been honoured by the Gorsedd of the Bards.

Sarah Hopkin has been biting her nails for three weeks after been informed of the honour, but was sworn to secrecy.

Sarah is one of four people from the region who will be presented with blue robes at the Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddfod this year.

Her fellow appointees include Tycroes TV star Alex Jones, Llandelio music teacher Gillian Thomas and retired primary school teacher Esme Jones.

“I am still in shock,” said Sarah, who has been honoured for “clear contribution to the Welsh language and culture of her country”.

“I could not believe it when I received the letter.

“I did not know whether I could tell anyone – even my husband.

“As someone who has been brought up taking part in the Eisteddfod and who spent 35 years teaching Welsh it is a great honour.

“I have been involved in folk dancing for many years and will be adjudicating at this year’s Eisteddfod so it will make it all the more special.”

Esme, from Crugybar and a former head of Caio primary school, said she felt “greatly honoured” to have been recognised.

“It is lovely to have been nominated,” she said.

“I am very, very grateful to the people who have nominated me.

“I knew nothing about it until I received the letter.

“I do feel greatly honoured.”

Esme was recognised for her “valuable contribution to activities in the Dinefwr area”.

The recognition will see all four made honorary druids after being presented with blue robes for services to the nation.

Gillian has been honoured for her role “organising the county’s children’s orchestra” while One Show host Alex has been recognised for her efforts showing “support for the language and culture” of Wales.

The honours, presented annually, recognise individuals from all parts of the country for their achievements and their commitment to Wales, the Welsh language and to their local communities.

The four winners will be honoured at a special ceremony on the Eisteddfod Maes in Meifod on Friday, August 7.

The Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddfod will be held from August 1 to 8. For more information go to eisteddfod.org.uk.
