ABERGLASNEY Gardens has officially launched Wales' only Giant Vegetable Growing Competition.

For the third year, Gardens staff hope to encourage both experienced gardeners and novices to get planting.

Last year, competitors from all over the country came together to show off their monster veg and head gardener Joseph Atkin hopes to see many more first time competitors this year.

“Now’s the time to get planting for the 2015 competition and if you’ve never grown vegetables before this is a great opportunity to find out for yourself just how easy it is," he said.

“We’re pleased that our competition attracts some very serious growers too. In previous years we’ve had world-record breaking swedes and tomatoes on display.”

Last year, a carrot measuring more than three metres and a 72cm runner bean were among the produce on show at the garden.

Gardening guru and 11-time Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner Medwyn Williams MBE will judge the competition.

Judging takes place on October 25, but gardeners will need to get growing now.
