An Amman Valley postie, famous for wearing his shorts come rain or shine, has delivered his last letter after more than 26 years on the job.

David Evans, of Rodfa Brynrhos in Glanaman, has been doing his round since 1989 but has decided it is finally time to put down his bag and put his feet up.

“The thing is I’ve managed to do all the odd jobs, I’ve put off to do in my retirement, in three days,” said David.

“But I have plans to do a lot of charity work as I have previously raised money for Marie Currie cancer by wearing my shorts to work every day for two years.”

Many of the familiar faces on the 62-year-old’s round will never have realised that the cheeky chappy who brightened up their mornings was in uniform long before he pulled on a postman's outfit, having served in the Royal Navy for 12 years after joining up at just 16 years old.

“I was a Petty Officer in the Navy – and joined when I was just a young lad,” said David.

“I’ve worked hard all my life so I thought it was about time I put my feet up for a bit – although I don’t think the wife agrees, she’s got a list of jobs for me to do around the house as long as your arm.

“I would have more of a rest if I went back to work.”

David has no plans to take things easy just yet however and is competing in the Velothon Wales 2015 which takes place in Cardiff on Sunday, June 15.

“I can’t wait for this event,” added David.

“It gets me out of the house and onto my bike, which I love, and I’m hoping to raise some money for charity at the same time.”

So before David settled into retirement and bowed out gracefully he wanted to say a big thank you to all his work colleagues and customers over the years.

“I will miss the guys and girls at work, we used to have a great laugh - and I will miss my customers too, and I would just like thank them all for their kind words and messages of support.

“I will miss them all.”
