A Streic y Glowyr – Adam Price’s S4C documentary charting the impact of the 1984-5 Miners Strike has scooped a bronze medal at the prestigious New York Festival.

The four-part series saw the former Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP, from Tycroes, revisiting the events of the strike through the eyes and recollections of those who took part, including his own father and mother.

Price, now 45, was a teenager during the strike and the events he witnessed shaped his world view and politics.

“The strike represents one of the most important chapters in Wales’ recent history,” said Mr Price.

“I tend to look at the strike from one perspective — a battle to safeguard employment in the area and defend a way of life that meant so much to me, my family and community.

“For me, it was an inspirational time when Welsh communities defended our way of life against the power of the Tory government.”

In the series, Mr Price interviewed “people whom I admired and hated,” including leading members of Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government, such as Norman Tebbit and Leon Brittan.

The documentary was awarded the bronze medal in the History and Society category.

The New York Festival proved a rich ground for S4C with the Welsh language channel also scooping a silver medal in the Biography and Profiles category for Gwirionedd y Galon: Dr John Davies, a documentary detailing the life and work of the late historian.

Llion Iwan, S4C Factual Content Commissioner, said, "I'm very proud that two programmes of such significance to Welsh history and heritage have been honoured in this way at an international awards event.

“Adam Price's journey through the 1984-85 Miners' Strike is a lasting personal document of a turbulent year in recent history.

“The portrayal of the late Dr John Davies, made even more poignant following his death in February 2015, is a fitting tribute to a man who did more than anyone of his generation to expand our understanding of Welsh history."

The awards were presented at a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, April 14, where S4C enjoyed success for the third year running.
