VISITORS coming into the Amman Valley are being greeted with an eyesore, according to a Gwaun Cae Gurwen community councillor.

At a monthly council meeting, Councillor Geoff Moore said the hedgerows and lay-bys along the A474 from Pontardawe to Cwmgors are covered with litter.

Cllr Moore believes most of the rubbish is fallen waste from the back of trailers going to the landfill site just off the A474.

“It is a disgrace, this road is the main road into the Amman Valley from Neath Port Talbot and it looks a mess.

“This stretch of road has a problem with high levels of traffic with motorists throwing rubbish from their cars.

“Something needs to be done on a more regular basis,” he said.

Councillor Adrian Herdman also expressed his concern for the stretch of road.

“The First Minster came to the area recently, and I noticed the litter was cleared for him.

“If the council can clean up for the First Minister, then why can’t they do it for our visitors?”

A spokesperson for Neath Port Talbot Council said the stretch of road is cleansed by the authority’s Fast Roads Team around four times a year with lay-bys being cleaned weekly.

“The next cleanse is due to be carried out in the coming weeks, with many sections of this road requiring dedicated traffic management to ensure that the works are carried out safely.

“Our litter enforcement team are active and have issued nearly 300 fixed penalty notices this year.”
