A Towy Valley teenager is set to make her first Welsh language TV appearance.

Ella Peel, from Llandovery, has already appeared in English shows such as Mistresses and The Story of Tracey Beaker on the BBC.

But on Saturday, February 21, the 18-year-old will be venturing onto new grounds as she turns her this is her talents to acting in Welsh on TV.

Ella stars in the lead role of Carys in Y Streic a fi, a film depicting the Miners’ Strike of the 1980s.

In the film, everything happens through the eyes of Carys, a 17-year-old whose father works as a miner.

"This is the first Welsh film I've done, and also my first film as an adult,” said Ella.

“As a child, I felt people gave me a script, I learnt the lines and that was that. With this film, I've done more research and gone more deeply into the and was inspired by Philippa Davies' e-novel, The Gritties.

The strike tears Carys' life apart, and causes a tension within her family, which has a direct effect on her.

"Carys is a typical teenager, at the start of the film she just thinks about her own situation,” said Ella.

“She doesn't like the place she's from and the strike is a game to her. She's very mixed up but things happen to her and she starts to take notice and listen to others.”

Her first major Welsh language role came as something of a surprise to Ella’s family.

"They had a bit of a shock to see me acting in Y Streic a Fi. They knew I spoke Welsh, but they had never seen nor heard me speaking the language," she said.
