REPRESENTATIVES of mobile phone giant, Three, are set to visit Carmarthenshire this week to discuss mobile phone coverage in the county with Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Jonathan Edwards.

At the start of the year Mr Edwards launched a campaign to improve mobile availability in Carmarthenshire after parts of the county considered mobile “black-spots” were left cut off for weeks when bad weather damaged land-lines cables.

The Connecting Carmarthenshire campaign calls for a mobile signal to be accessible in all parts of the county, with Mr Edwards describing phone coverage as “a basic utility” which should be available to all.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has since announced a £5billion investment package to increase signal provision in Wales from 63 per cent to 83 per cent.

Representatives of Three, the UK’s fastest-growing network, approached Mr Edwards and Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas to discuss the company’s plans for the county.

Spokesman for the firm said: "We are investing heavily in our network in 2015 and 2016 to bring it to more people in more places.

“We will be rolling out new radio spectrum which will enhance our coverage in Carmarthenshire.

“We are meeting with Jonathan Edwards to discuss how these improvements will benefit our customers in the area."

Mr Edwards said: “Connecting Carmarthenshire is a very important priority for me. It simply isn’t right that many communities are unable to get a basic mobile phone signal. Good connectivity through mobile phones should be a basic utility.

“Additionally, 3G or 4G signals could support broadband and remove the need for ageing and very poor landline connections which are not being upgraded.

“I’m delighted to have been approached by the mobile phone giant and very much looking forward to discussing how I can progress my campaign to properly connect Carmarthenshire.

“There are some very encouraging steps taking place with regards to investment in mobile infrastructure which could see mobile phone operators all sharing masts to boost the availability of signals. I want to ensure the Carmarthenshire is at the top of the agenda for investment.”
