THE Amman Valley is one of the safest places in Wales to live, the latest figures have revealed.

The latest annual survey carried out by Moneysupermarket.com has show that the valley has one of the lowest burglary rates in the country.

The leading price comparison website looked at 2.68million home insurance quotes handed out to households across Britain between December 2013 and November 2014 to find out which postcodes made the most claims for burglary.

Ammanford town centre, Betws, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, Lower Brynamman came seventh best at the other end of the scale - the areas least likely to submit a claim after a property had been targeted by burglars.

Dyfed-Powys Police welcomed the report and said it highlighted the claim that the area was one of the best in Wales in which to live and work.

Ammanford Sergeant Kerry Scoberg said: “It is pleasing to see that the Amman Valley remains one of the safest places to live in Wales.

"It is testament to the community and their willingness to engage with the local police team that we are able to maintain these figures, which serve as reassurance to our communities.

“Despite the encouraging results we are not complacent, and will continue to look at ways in which we can improve the service we provide.

"Educating our communities through crime prevention advice and initiatives is a priority.

"Simple actions like locking doors and windows can have a significant impact on the prevention of crime such as burglary.”

Carmarthen East and Dinefwr MP Jonathan Edwards also welcomed the figures, but said residents can never be too careful in keeping their homes and possessions protected from opportunists.

“An analysis of over 2.5million pieces of data is quite a comprehensive assessment,” said Mr Edwards.

“I think we can warmly welcome that Amman Valley communities are amongst the lowest areas in Wales for burglary.

“We know that we live in some of most friendly and welcoming places in Wales, and learning that our communities are amongst the lowest for burglary is particularly pleasing.

“That said, we do hear of the odd incident here and there, and we can never be too careful to keep our homes and possessions protected from the inevitable opportunist out there.

“I’m sure local residents will take great comfort from this news, and I know the community spirit of the Amman Valley will see residents continuing to look out for each other.”
