BETWS rugby players have taken their kit off for a full monty-style calendar for charity.

The calendar was the brainchild of Betws RFC player Gareth Comley whose nephew, Jake Miles, suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

“I wanted to do something a bit different for Jake’s charity,” said Gareth who plays for Betws RFC.

“I asked the lads if they wanted to get involved and they didn’t need much persuasion – they were keen to get their kit off,” said Gareth.

The cheeky calendar shows the team in a number of provocative poses – but if you were hoping to pick up a copy for yourself you’re out of luck, because they sold like hot cakes.

“I had 200 copies of the calendar printed and after a day of selling in Ammanford’s Tesco, they sold out.

“Jake called over to the store after school and he was chuffed to see they had all gone,” added Gareth.

The money will go to The Race for Jake Appeal, a charity set up for the seven-year-old Saron lad in 2007.

To date, more than £50,000 has been raised through the charity to finance research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a muscle-wasting disease which currently has no cure.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects around 2,500 children, almost entirely boys, in the UK.

Typically, it leaves sufferers unable to walk and needing a wheelchair for mobility.

Unless a cure is found, most will not survive past their teens.

The team at Betws would like to thank Emily Madge for giving her time to take the photographs, Morgan and Morgan for printing the calendar and Betws RFC for the use of the club.

“The sponsors also need a big thank you,” said doting uncle Gareth.

“If it wasn’t for their backing, we would not have been able to go ahead with the calendar.

“It was a good laugh to make and the proceeds are a fantastic boost for the charity.”

Jake and his family wish to thank the boys at Betws RFC and all involved who helped make the calendar possible.
