Eight schools will see 20mph zones imposed outside their gates after the Welsh Government launched a £500,000 safety campaign.

Transport Minister Edwina Hart said the part-time restrictions would be rolled out over the next two years.

Tycroes Primary, Ysgol Rhys Pritchard, Ysgol Teilo Sant, Llandeilo Primary, Ysgol Parcyrhun, Ysgol Gyfun Pantycleyn, Llandybie Primary, and Llandovery College were all earmarked as subject to the scheme, set to improve safety on the A483.

Mrs Hart said: “I am committed to improving the safety on Wales’ trunk road network and improving conditions for those who live, work and go to school on or nearby trunk roads.

“The evidence shows that 20mph speed limits can improve driver behaviour and reduce speeds around schools, however enforcement is key to the success of the speed limit.

“However due to the nature of the trunk road network and some of the long distance journeys undertaken we need to balance the need of the drivers and that is why I have decided to introduce part-time 20mph speed limits, around when pupils are travelling to and from school.

“As well as improving safety I hope this will encourage more children and young people to walk or cycle to school.”

Tycroes County Councillor Calum Higgins has campaigned for a 20mph zone outside the village school since his election in 2012, and welcomed the announcement.

"Earlier this year the Minister promised that speed limits outside schools on the A483 would be reviewed and an announcement would be made by the end of the year,” said Cllr Higgins.

“I'm pleased that the Welsh Government has finally recognised the need for a 20mph zone outside schools on the trunk road.”

"The 20mph will be part-time only, meaning that the traffic will be unimpeded outside of school hours."
