AMMANFORD police officers held a successful drugs operation in the town last weekend.

Working with the pubs and clubs in the town, Dyfed-Powys officers have previously used a drug scanning machine as a condition of entry.

Last Saturday they used a passive line drugs dog, that sniffs out individuals who have been in contact with illegal substances.

Ozzy the dog either follows or sits in front of a person in possession of drugs in what was the first of many pro-active operations set to be run by Ammanford policing team over the next few months.

“It’s all to try and achieve our local priority which is to further reduce violent crime,” said PC Steve Morris.

“Historically we have had to ask for other forces to assist with their dogs, but now Dyfed-Powys have two very skilled dogs that we can call upon for similar operations.”

The force will be running a similar operation over the Christmas period.

“The majority of the public together with licensees want to go out and enjoy themselves without having to come into contact with anyone under the influence of illegal drugs,” added PC Morris.

“We will continue to do everything we can to help with this and continue to look at innovative ideas to meet the needs of the people of Ammanford and the surrounding villages.

“The message is simple – if you are caught in possession of drugs you will be prosecuted and recommended to the Behave or Be Band (Bobb) scheme.”

As part of the Bobb scheme those found with drugs will be banned from every pub in Ammanford and several pubs and clubs in and around Ammanford.

“Officers were pleased to see that the planned operation was a great success and was warmly welcomed by all of the people we met,” said PC Morris.

No drugs were found during the operation last Saturday night.

If anyone has any information on the use or supply of illegal drugs report it to 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
