NURSE Sebastian Werys is in the running for a top award after impressing his employers at an Ystradgynlais care home with his cool, calm approach.

Seb, aged 40, started working at the Cwrt Enfys Care Home in Ystradgynlais last summer after previously working for a care organisation in Milton Keynes.

“I came here last year and I am very happy to be here. I have learnt a lot of new things and both the staff and residents are very friendly so I’m really enjoying it," said Seb, who lives in Fforestfach.

The carer has impressed the team at Cwrt Enfys with his ‘calm and professional approach’, prompting General Manager Karen Beech to nominate him for an award in the annual Wales Care Awards held next month, recognising the very best individuals in the industry.

Seb said, “I always like to maintain a good relationship with both residents and families here and treat everyone with an equal respect and dignity.

“I work as a staff nurse on day and night shifts and the team here are wonderful and I can always consult my manager about anything.”

The Wales Care Awards, run by Care Forum Wales, acknowledge the hard work and exceptional performances of those in the care sector, culminating in a glittering ceremony at City Hall in Cardiff on Friday, October 24.

In the meantime, bashful Seb intends to carry on doing what he is doing. “When I first heard about the award I didn’t quite believe it," he said.

“I’m very proud that people notice what I’m doing but at the same time I’m just doing my job like everyone else here, so I’ll just continue to do the same."

Mario Kreft MBE, the Chair of Care Forum Wales, said the Wales Care Awards had gone from strength to strength.

He said: “The event is now firmly established as one of the highlights in the Welsh social care calendar.

“The aim is to recognise the unstinting and often remarkable dedication of our unsung heroes and heroines across Wales.

“We need to do all we can to raise the profile of the care sector workforce - they deserve to be lauded and applauded.

“It is a pleasure to honour the contribution of all the finalists. Each and every one of them should be very proud of their achievement."
