The Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime Commissioner has welcomed an innovative scheme to turn unused licence tax disc holders stuck to every car windscreen into potential life-savers.
The end of vehicle paper tax discs following the switch to digital records has meant that the familiar transparent plastic envelopes have become obsolete.
However, a team of officers from Malvern have dreamt up a scheme where the empty disc holders could be used to keep a form detailing emergency contact information and a medical alert card for the driver.
PC Dave Wise, who came up with the idea, said: "This is a really useful replacement for your tax disc.
“If a driver is involved in a collision or has a medical emergency whilst at the wheel, a first responder will have easy access to vital medical information and we can quickly contact next of kin.
"The way the disc folds in on itself means all the information is kept private until needed by emergency services personnel."
Dyfed-Powys Commissioner Christopher Salmon said he would be monitoring the project.
“This scheme is an interesting idea,” he said.
“We will be looking in to it to see how it works.”
