A PENYGROES syndicate has scooped £1,000,000 on the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle.

The lucky 15, whose ages range from 55 to 88, are all members of Penygroes rugby club and have each won £66,666.87 - as they also matched two main numbers in the EuroMillions draw on Friday, September 26, bringing their total winnings to £1,000,003.10.

The friends – Terry Rees, 73, Gwyndaf Griffiths, 75, Hywel Evans, 75, Omri Davies, 69, Marsden Williams, 63, Alun Walters, 77, Eric Davies, 70, Barry Morgan, 88, David Thomas, 81, Graham Rees, 63, Elwyn Roderick, 68, John Rees, 62, Tony Powell, 55, Paul Williams, 61, and John Thomas, 68, who is currently on holiday – matched the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle selection on Friday 26 September.

Syndicate leader Terry discovered the win the following day after he took the ticket to the local Today’s Store in Gorslas Square – where he always buys his tickets from - and handed it to the cashier.

Syndicate leader Terry said, “The young lad in the shop very calmly told me we’d won £1million and handed the ticket back! I came home and told my wife but she was on her way to the hairdressers. It was only when she was getting her hair done that it dawned on her!

“I walked around to all the syndicate members’ houses to tell them the news – it was more the wives that were in shock!”

Terry and his wife were due to go on a pre-scheduled holiday later that day so phoned Camelot to register the win and put the ticket in a safe place – which they won’t divulge!

On their return from holiday, the syndicate group got together for a small celebration and buffet at the rugby club.

One of the 15, Eric Davies, told the Guardian, he was on the golf course with John and Paul when he heard the news.

"My wife Olive rang me up and I was shocked," he said. "I told John and Paul, but Paul didn't believe me, he had to ring his wife to confirm."

"Things like this just don't happy to me," said Paul.

"We are over the moon."

The syndicate have been playing the EuroMillions for around 12 years with each player putting in £2 a week. Terry says: “We’ve had people come and go from the syndicate, but since taking over as leader four years ago, I pick the numbers. I stick to the same numbers for about a month and then change them – the members are very trusting which reflects the strong sense of community here.

“The group has never won anything big before, but all little winnings go in a kitty which we share out at Christmas.”

The syndicate has vowed to be sensible with their winnings and not rush in to anything.

The winning raffle number was XTR537741.
