A DYFED Powys Police officer who risked his life to rescue a teenage boy from drowning in Llandybie has urged locals to nominate people who they think are exceptional for the Welsh Government's 2015 St David Awards.

PC Alun Morgan was a finalist in the Bravery section of the 2014 awards in recognition of his selfless action.

The people of Carmarthenshire are urged by PC Morgan to nominate people, teams or groups they believe are going that extra mile to benefit others and are the best in Wales for the 2015 awards.

The closing date for nominations is October 28.

Speaking about being a finalist in the inaugural St David Award, PC Morgan said, "I was honoured to be nominated and become a finalist in the St David Awards for Bravery.

"Being a finalist not only recognised my individual effort, but the hard work and support of all the people involved in the rescue.

“I would call on those who make a difference to our lives to be nominated for the Awards in 2015.

The St David Awards honours the extraordinary achievements of the people of Wales. There are nine categories, bravery, citizenship, culture, enterprise, innovation and technology, technology, sport, young person, international and the First Minister's special award.

The award for Bravery is awarded to an individual or group who, through their endeavours, have demonstrated remarkable courageous behaviour or character. This may entail simple fearlessness or physical bravery and involves acting in spite of possible harm to one's body.

PC Morgan was nominated for jumping into a reservoir to save a 14-year-old boy at Cilyrychen Quarry, in June 2012. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, the boy tragically passed away in hospital.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said, “The heroic actions of PC Alun Morgan are an exceptional inspiration to us all. It is testament to his selfless courage and quick thinking in an extreme emergency. Bravery like this should be recognised and honoured.

“I am pleased that PC Morgan is now continuing his involvement with these awards by calling on people to nominate those who should be celebrated as the very best of Wales.

“I join PC Morgan is urging people to nominate someone they feel equally deserves this honour.”

Nominations for a St David Award must be received by midnight on October 28. The judging panel, chaired by Lord Rowe Beddoe, includes the chair of Sports Wales, Professor Laura McAllister, the director of the Urdd, Efa Gruffudd Jones as well as Robin Jones.
