A Llandybie teen with an "unpleasant, violent past" has been sentenced to a 16-week suspended jail term after he admitted his part in an unprovoked assault.

Kevin Junior Butler, of 83 Cae Coed, along with 19-year-old Daniel Anthony Terry Harries, of 125 Brynhyfryd in Llangennech, pleaded guilty to the common assault of two men at an address in Ammanford.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard Jones described how victims Steven Pritchard and Christopher Harding had been drinking at home most of the day on February 18 when Butler, aged 18, and Harries arrived.

The court was told how, after consuming a large amount of alcohol, Mr Harding had fallen asleep upstairs while Mr Pritchard fell asleep on the couch.

At 11.15pm, Mr Pritchard was woken by a knock on the door.

"He answered it, and Harris came in with Butler," said Mr Pritchard Jones. "At first everything was fine.

“Then, from nowhere, Harries punched Mr Pritchard in the face seven to eight times."

As a result of the attack, Mr Pritchard collapsed on the floor.

“Butler then jumped on his body,” said Mr Pritchard Jones.

Mr Harding, who had been sleeping upstairs, was woken by the noise and came to investigate.

“Mr Harding witnessed the two men attacking his friend,” said Mr Pritchard Jones.

The two men left the property, but returned later and Butler attacked Mr Harding, punching him in the head.

"He fell to the floor and hit his head off the television then Harries kicked him to the body," Mr Pritchard Jones said.

Mr Harding sustained a large lump to his eyebrow, swelling to his lips, and a bruise to his arm.

Police were called to the property and Butler and Harries were later arrested.

Defence solicitor, Mr Andrew Isaac, said: “Both Butler and Harries were invited into the premises with no problem, but they say the claimants attacked them.

“However, they both give an unreserved apology for what they have done.

Sentencing Butler to a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, District Judge David Parsons, sitting at Llanelli court, said: “You have a string of previous convictions, and an unpleasant violent past.

Butler was also ordered to complete 60 hours unpaid work with a 12-month supervision requirement, and attend six sessions of a alcohol awareness course.

Harris was also jailed for 16 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work with a six-month supervision order.

They were each ordered to pay £200 compensation, and £80 victim surcharge.
