A BONLLWYN football fan who drove home after drinking three cans of beer while watching a match has admitted drink-driving.

Richard James Hughes, of 2 Maes Llwyn, was spotted by police driving a Ford Focus on the Myddynfych estate on Wednesday, July 9, at approximately 12.30am after watching Argentina's nail-biting 4-2 penalty shootout win over Holland in the World Cup semi-final.

The 31-year-old, appeared before Llanelli magistrates to plead guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Prosecuting solicitor, Ellie Morgan, told magistrates that when police stopped the vehicle and it was obvious Hughes had been drinking.

“During the arrest Hughes admitted to police he had consumed three cans of beer while watching a World Cup match with friends,” she said.

Police tests showed that Hughes had 102 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood – the legal limit is 80.

Defence solicitor Richard Morgan said: “He is very sorry and he fully understands what he did was wrong.

“He did not realise that drinking three cans of beer would result in him being over the legal limit to drive.”

Mr Morgan described Hughes as a good father who was employed full-time for a fibreglass company, where he has just been promoted to supervisor.

Magistrates banned Hughes from driving for 12 months and fined him £240.

Hughes was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £24 victim surcharge.
