A Drefach woman has cycled 50 miles to raise money for Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity LATCH following their support for Glanaman youngster Hannah Poole.

Nicola Evans, originally from Penygroes, completed the gruelling Merlin Cycle around Carmarthenshire in aid of the children’s charity having been inspired by little Hannah’s story.

Fighter Hannah, who will turn four in two weeks, was diagnosed with leukaemia in November last year and is undergoing treatment. She and her family have received continuous support from LATCH.

Nicola said: “I wanted to do the Merlin Cycle to raise funds for a local good cause and when I came across Hannah’s Facebook page, I contacted Katrina – her mum – to see if I could help.

“Katrina suggested I raise money for LATCH.”

Medical secretary Nicola, aged 34, took up cycling only six weeks before the challenge and bought her bike a week later - training with the CMC Cycling Club in Llandeilo.

She has raised a total of £1,412 thanks to the sponsorship of friends and colleagues.

Katrina has been overwhelmed by the response of the public following Hannah’s diagnosis.

“We are just so happy that so many people have got behind Hannah and LATCH as a charity,” said Katrina.

“We have been really amazed by the support we have had. It is really touching.”

Helen Gravelle, LATCH representative for West Wales, said: “Efforts like this mean a great deal to us. It allows us to provide care and support for children with cancer in Wales.

“This kind of fundraising is absolutely vital to us.

“LATCH could not survive without the generosity of people like Nicola.”
