CALUM Higgins, Labour's Parliamentary candidate for Carmarthenshire East and Dinefwr,has re-affirmed his support for Labour leader Ed Miliband's pledge to scrap the so-called 'bedroom tax'.
Over the past year since it was introduced, the unpopular tax has forced low-income households to find, on average, an extra £720 a year.
According to the National Housing Federation two thirds of households hit by the bedroom tax cannot find the money to pay their rents and one in seven are at risk of eviction.
“With rent arrears at record highs and a lack of smaller properties to move into, the real cost of the bedroom tax in Carmarthenshire is paid day in day out by the 1,914 people struggling to make ends meet," said Mr Higgins.
“One year on, and far from saving money the bedroom tax policy has been an utter disaster and has cost more than the Tories said they’d save.
"If I am elected as the local MP next year, make no mistake, I will support Ed Miliband in scrapping the bedroom tax.”
