TRAFFIC chiefs have rejected calls for double yellow lines in Betws Square, saying that most parking at the location in the morning was "sporadic" and did not justify such a move.

The results of the survey were conveyed to community councillors by county councillor Ryan Bartlett, who said no injury accidents had been reported at the square over the past five years.

Betws councillors had previously reported on "chaotic" parking near the church at around 8.45am, largely caused by parents dropping their kids off at the local nursery or drivers pulling up outside the nearby newsagent.

But the traffic survey concluded that "parking on the bend was short-term.

Officers continued: "We do not feel this location needs double yellow lines because the parking is short-lived and sporadic and people would still take a chance to stop briefly on the oines to drop their children off or to get a paper.

"The owners of the newsagents would also strongly object to such a move."

Cllr June Gunther commented: "It's not just the fact drivers stop there to park – they also stop to have a chat with each other."

But Cllr Bartlett felt there was little point in disputing the report's conclusions. "Whether we like it or not these are the results of the survey and we cannot change it," he said.

"A similar result was found five years ago."

Cllr Maldwyn John suggested motorists should "use some commonsense", but Cllr Richard Howell sympathised with drivers.

"Where else are they going to park?" he asked. "There's nowhere else in that area."
