WELSH Government chiefs are looking into the possibility of installing a pedestrian crossing on Pontarddulais Road outside Tycroes School following concerns expressed by staff and parents.

Last month the Guardian reported how the school's lollipop lady had resigned shortly after a three-car pile-up outside the school gates.

Confiming that the issue had now been brought to the attention of the Welsh Government Minister for Transport, local councillor Calum Higgins said recent traffic issues had prompted letters from the village of Tycroes to be sent to SWTRA, the trunk road agency.

"While I welcome an assessment and a bid being put together, I am anxious that it's only a matter of time before someone is hurt," he said. "The campaign for a crossing has been long and established – everyone I've talked to in Tycroes village believes that there needs to be a crossing there."

"I also welcome that fact that police have been carrying out targeted speeding checks along the road in conjunction with the school. It's important that they keep this up and make a point of raising awareness outside the school."

He added that the road would be assessed early next year and funding prioritised on an All-Wales basis.
