Record breaking certificate is presented to Ammanford mayor
THE woman who masterminded Ammanford’s world record for the largest gathering of Santa’s elves said this week: “We socked it to The Big Apple!”
Gail Jones, community liaison officer for Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd, was at Ammanford Town Hall to present the Guinness Book of World Records certificate to mayor Paula Treharne.
“ABC Studios in New York had held the world record for the past four years,” Ms Jones told town councillors. “Now this little town in west Wales has topped that achievement.”
Last month the Guardian revealed that Guinness had confirmed Ammanford’s total of 762 elves – who gathered on Quay Street on Saturday, November 17 – had smashed the previous world best of 607.
Accepting the certificate on behalf of the town, Ms Treharne told Ms Jones: “We’re really grateful for the effort you put in on the day.
“It was an absolutely brilliant occasion and one we will remember for a very long time.”
Receiving a gift from the council in return, Ms Jones replied: “The event really did get people into the town and I learnt so much fromthe experience.
I was really proud to have been part of it – please do it again!”
Councillors confirmed they are indeed looking at the possibility of attempting to break the town’s own record.
“I’ve never seen so many people in Quay Street,” said Cllr Chris Jones.
