A TOWY Valley further education college for disabled young people has won thousands of pounds to spend on new equipment.

Coleg Elidir in Rhandirmwyn beat off stiff competition from community groups across Wales to top a public vote and claim £5,000 from Lloyds Banking Group’s Community Fund to spend on computer tablets.

“This investment is something we have been planning for quite a long time and receiving this grant will enable us to carry those plans out,” said the college’s business development manager, Tom Thurtle.

“We were over the moon when we found out we had won.

“It’s great to receive some very useful money and to further one of the charity’s objectives as well as increase our profile.”

Set up in 1973, Coleg Elidir provides training for young adults aged 18-plus with learning difficulties and disabilities.

More than 200,000 people took part in a public vote online and at Olympic torch relay celebrations between May and September to select the charities they wanted to receive the cash - part of £660,000 Lloyds Banking Group is investing across the UK.

In total, 132 projects are set to receive £5,000 as part of the campaign.

“The Community Fund highlights the Lloyds Banking Group’s ongoing commitment to the communities we serve and doing more to help Britain prosper,”

said community and sustainable business director Paul Turner.

“We are proud to be able to help Coleg Elidir continue the great work they are doing and we look forward to seeing the difference the award will make.”
