A GLANAMAN teenager grew cannabis “as a hobby”, a court has been told.
Declan Thomas Maguire, formerly of 11 Maesybont, appeared before Llanelli magistrates to admit acharge of production of the ClassBdrug.
Ellie Morgan, prosecuting, told the court how police carried out a raid on the 19-year-old’s home on August 9.
Ms Morgan described howMaguire led officers to thebathroomwherehewas growing a small single cannabis plant in a pot on the windowsill.
He told the officers: “That’s all I’ve got.”
Ms Morgan described how Maguire had germinated the seed in cotton wool and then planted it in compost to see whether it would grow.
“He told officers he had grown it because he want ed to smoke it,” said Ms Morgan.
“This was not a sophisticated affair by any means.
He told the police he had grown it for his own personal use and as a hobby.
“He said that the smoke at the end of itwould just be a bonus.”
Richard Morgan, defending, told magistrates that Maguire had been fully cooperative with the police.
“He has previously involved himself with drugs, but on this occasion there was some degree of experimentation going on to see if he could grow one plant.”
Mr Morgan told the court that since the raid Maguire had been evicted fromhishomeandwasnow living roughinwoodland in the Gorslas area while depending on his girlfriend for food.
Maguire apologised to the court for his actions.
Thecourtwas told that in August 2011 Maguire received a police caution for being involved in cannabis production.
Magistrates adjourned sentencing for probation reports.
