Amphetamine a 'birthday treat'
8:00am Friday 14th September 2012 in News
A 47-YEAR-OLD Amman Valley man who bought himself a bag of amphetamine sulphate as a birthday treat has been ordered to pay £175 in fines and court costs.
Stephen Michael John Emery, of 39 Maes y Glyn, in Lower Brynaman, was stopped by police while walking along Llandeilo Road on May 29.
Due to his demeanour, Emery was searched by officers who discovered a small plastic bag containing white powder in the pocket of his shorts.
Emery immediately told the officers the powder was speed – the street name for amphetamine sulphate.
Ellie Morgan, prosecuting, described how Emery’s flat was then searched and a small electronic weighing scale was confiscated.
When asked about the drugs, Emery told officers: “It’s a birthday treat for myself.”
Emery had celebrated his birthday four days prior to his arrest.
He also admitted using the scale at his home to weigh amphetamine.
Llanelli magistrates were told that Emery had been fully co-operative with the police from the moment he was stopped in the street.
Emery pleaded guilty to possessing the Class B drug.
Emery was fined £75 and ordered to pay £85 court costs.
He was also ordered to pay an additional £15 victim surcharge.
Magistrates also ordered the destruction of Emery’s scale.
