CARMARTHENSHIRE county council will modernise every one of its 9,300 council houses and flats in the coming years, Leader Kevin Madge has pledged.
Presenting the local authority’s Forward Work programme to members of the executive board, Cllr Madge said the authority would invest a further £75m into their housing stock to combat long waiting lists, a dearth of council houses and a shortage of affordable homes.
“We will also build new socially-owned bungalows for elderly people – we will be one of the first councils in the UK to do that,” he said. “In addition, an extra £12m will be going into highways over the next couple of years.”
He added that education remained one of the authority’s biggest priorities and that, despite economic restraints, officers had managed to “maintain momentum” on other major strategic schemes.
