Leader’s pledge to help workers
10:10am Thursday 28th June 2012 in News
THE leader of Carmarthenshire County Council has vowed to do all he can to support workers at Capel Hendre’s threatened Dewhirst warehouse.
Cllr Kevin Madge said: “We have made approaches to the Welsh Government and Jobcentre Plus and we are in dialogue in readiness for any developments on this issue.
“We have offered as much support as would be needed to assist the firm and its employees in any way we can.”
The clothing company, which manufactures garments for Marks & Spencer, is set to consult unions and staff over potential redundancies at the site, which employs 124.
Dewhirst’s Capel Hendre warehouse is used to store and check products made abroad before the items are distributed to M&S stores nationwide.
“No major decision has been taken as yet on the future of Dewhirst,” said Cllr Madge.
“A task force would be formed of key stakeholders such as the county council, Welsh Government and Job Centre Plus if a decision was taken to close the factory and make redundancies.”
