Llandeilo road closure 'on hold'
9:00am Saturday 23rd June 2012 in News
LLANDEILO traders are celebrating after plans to close Rhosmaen Street throughout the autumn were put on hold.
Shop owners had been in uproar after it emerged that Wales and West Utilities planned to carry out major maintenance work on the gas supply in the town, leading to the closure of the main thoroughfare from early September until the end of November.
The move had been labelled a disaster for the town, with traders already struggling in the financial downturn.
However, the U-turn – which followed a meeting between the utilities company, Carmarthenshire county council, the Trunk Roads Agency, traders and townand community councillors – will mean the work is postponed until January.
Councillor Edward Thomas said: “The gas main renewal is essentialwork, but the original period would have had a disastrous effect on Llandeilo’s fragile business community. “Moving the date will allow the various festivals to continue.”
