BETWS community councillors are urging their Ammanford counterparts to back their campaign for a zebra crossing in Foundry Road.

But exasperated members claim previous approaches to Ammanford town council have drawn a blank.

“We’ve asked on three occasions whether we can have a meeting with Ammanford and they’ve not replied,”

Cllr Annette Price told colleagues.

She was commenting after community clerk Cerith Griffiths gave an update on the issue.

“A feasibility study is still going on and, if successful, means Foundry Road will join six other locations in the county waiting for zebra crossings,”

he said.

“This location is actually not in Betws – it’s in Ammanford. If you get two councils complaining about something, you surely have a better chance of getting something done.”

Cllr Anne Sizmur said they had originally raised the matter on health and safety grounds. Cllr Price agreed and claimed the Foundry Road crossing was more of an issue for Betws residents.

“These are Betws children crossing that road and the knock-on effect of Tesco is far worse here than in Ammanford,” she said.

“Two weeks ago I counted around 45 schoolkids coming up that road – and those were just from the comprehensive.”

Mr Griffiths said he liked to think that the opening of Lidl’s supermarket in Foundry Road would strengthen the case for a zebra crossing.
