THE TOWY Valley enjoyed a royal visit on Friday as the Prince of Wales took time out from his hectic schedule for a brief walk around Llandovery.

Prince Charles was in the town to give a keynote speech at the Castle Hotel on the economic future of the region as president of the Cambrian Mountains Initiative.

The heir to the throne then enjoyed a stroll around the streets before arriving at the new Prime Cymru offices on Market Square where he marked the organisation’s tenth anniversary by unveiling a plaque and cutting a specially crafted birthday cake.

Prime Cymru was established by the Prince in 2001 and promotes those over 50 through employment, training and enterprise support.

Between engagements the Prince took time out to chat with shoppers, workers and bank staff.

Jacqueline James, manager of Trade Secrets, chatted with the Prince about the latest bargains to be had.

“He was very nice,” said Jacqueline, “and he wanted to know what everyone was buying.”

The Prince also called into the town’s Barclays Bank and met customer advisors Fiona Walters, Menna Richards and Susan Thomas.

“When he found out we were all farmers’ wives and daughters he was delighted,” said Menna.

“We didn’t even knowhe was in Llandovery today so it was great when he called in to see us.”

David Pugh, chief executive of Prime Cymru, praised the Prince’s efforts.

“He has always been very supportive of us and our work,” said Mr Pugh.

After his engagements, Prince Charles travelled to Llwynyrwermod, his home at Myddfai, were he remained until today.
