CWMGORS climbed up to fourth in the Division Five South West table after an excellent victory against the league leaders.

The defeat marked only Tycroes’ third loss of the season.

According to Cwmgors fixture secretary Jeff Bright, thiswas by far the Cherries’ best performance of the season.

Scrum half Matthew Jones gave the home side the early lead with a penalty success, but in a tight opening half in which try-scoring chances were few and far between defences were well on top.

Tycroes levelled with a penalty of their own to ensure a 3-3 score at the interval.

Both sides tackled like demons and Cwm full back Kieran Turner, switched from his usual flanker’s berth, gave an excellent account in his debut in that position.

Second row Liam Jones also impressed all over the park while prop Robert Clive also shone.

A special mention must go to the outstanding backrow unit of Cerith Dennard, Tom Bartholomew and Ethan Price, who provided the platform all afternoon.

An excellent Tycroes side’s defence was finally breached for the only time midway through the second half when man of the match, outside half Darren Howells – who impressed all day with his tactical kicking – fielded a neat crossfield punt, allowing wing Mike Hodges to gather and cross for a corner try.

Tycroes had their share of the attacking play late on, but neither side could penetrate the determined back lines.

● Cwmgors face another tough encounter on Saturday when they travel to second-in-thetable Penlan, who have been beaten only once so far this season.
