AN AMMANFORD musician is about to take on the biggest gig of his life – as musical director for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

Former Amman Valley Comprehensive pupil Rick Smith, along with Karl Hyde, form the legendary dance music act Underworld.

The duo have been taken on by movie director Danny Boyle to supervise the music for the Olympics showpiece opening ceremony – likely to be watched by a global audience of billions.

Underworld have regularly worked with Boyle since the Scottish director used the band’s song Born Slippy in the classic 90s movie Trainspotting.

Rick’s parents told the Guardian they were overjoyed at their son’s latest success.

“We are absolutely delighted for him,” said father Don.

“We were bowled over by the news.

“To think our son, who went to the local school, will be directing the opening ceremony of the Olympics is just incredible.”
