THE Llandeilo man who scored the winning points in Llanelli’s 1985 Schweppes Cup Final triumph over Cardiff crashed into two parked cars while driving 300 yards from his local pub to home, magistrates have been told.

Ian Wynn Jones, of 6 Carmarthen Road, enjoyed a glittering rugby career throughout the 1980s and 90s which included Wales B caps as well as spells with Llanelli, Cardiff Blues, Bristol and Neath.

Jones – who became known to the Stradey faithful as Spaceman – was in the squad to face Australia in 1992 alongside the likes of Ieuan Evans, Scott Gibbs and Robert Jones.

Ammanford magistrates were told how the 40-year-old, who works for Green Planet Solar Installations, downed four pints of lager at Llandeilo’s Salutation Inn after work on November 14.

Jones left the pub at 11.15pm and reversed his Peugeot 206 into a parked Renault Laguna.

The former full back then drove into a Peugeot 207 in front of him.

Peter Lloyd, prosecuting, told the court that Jones was confronted by passers-by, but drove away.

Police traced Jones to the home he shares with his parents less than 300 yards from the pub.

Tests showed he had 55 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Mike Reed, defending, told the court that Jones had also drunk a glassand- a-half of wine after returning home, but accepted he was over the limit when he got behind the wheel.

Mr Reed said Jones had difficulty manoeuvring his car out of its parking place.

“He was not aware at the time but he must have grazed the car,” said Mr Reed.

Jones pleaded guilty to driving while over the limit and driving without insurance.

Magistrates fined Jones £350 for driving with excess alcohol and £250 for having no insurance.

He was banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 legal surcharge.
