AN AMMAN Valley councillor fears the transportation of wind turbines through Pontardawe and Rhydyfro could delay emergency services.

Cllr Arwyn Woolcock, who last week joined a demonstration against what protestors claim is an illegal access to the windfarm site at Rhydyfro, fears fire engines and ambulances could be caught in a traffic snarl-up.

“I’m thinking specifically of the serious fire in Banwen Place, Lower Brynaman, which broke out on April 29,”

he said. “A tender from Ammanford went to the scene, but the fire was so serious that seven others from Pontardawe and Morriston were also dispatched. If those vehicles had been caught up in the transportation of these turbines they would not have made it.” Speaking of the protest on the A474, Cllr Woolcock said the access issue was a question of interpretation.

“The way I read it is that work at this site should not have started until the new speed limit of 30mph comes into force,” he said.
