A PAIR of homeless Ammanford teens claim Carmarthenshire county council are prepared to let them sleep on the streets.

Jobless pals Zack Griffiths, 18, and Sophie Davies, 17, say they are becoming increasingly desperate in the run-up to Christmas and now fear they may be forced to sleep rough.

But county council chiefs have hit back, claiming they have offered a number of possible solutions to the teenagers' plight.

"When I got kicked out of my mum's house the council wanted to put me in a hostel," Sophie told the Guardian.

"They kept trying to get me to move in their even though I had a note from my doctor saying it wouldn't be good for my health.

"It's not that I don't want to move in there - it's just that I suffer from anxiety and just cannot cope with crowds of people."

Zack said his own problems began when he was asked to leave his mother's home in August following a family dispute.

"The council say I'm not homeless even though I'm sleeping on friends' floors," he said.

"I can't carry on doing that forever - but the council have been useless. They haven't even offered me temporary accommodation.

"I just don't think the situation's fair. We are both very young and Sophie is quite vulnerable, yet the county council are being no help at all.

"At this rate we'll be sleeping on the streets by the end of the week. I'm so annoyed at the council I'm planning to sleep in a tent outside their offices in Ammanford to make my point."

Jonathan Morgan, Amman and Gwendraeth area housing manager, said: "Housing Officers have been liaising with Mr Griffiths and Miss Davies for some time and a number of solutions have been offerred to resolve their current difficulties.

"It is disappointing, however, that they have chosen not to engage with the advice and options that have been provided.

"We will obviously continue to work with Mr Griffiths and Miss Davies to resolve this situation but a successful outcome will very much depend on them taking responsibility to follow up the advice given."
