A 21-year-old Ammanford man has been granted a conditional discharge after he admitted using threatening words and behaviour during a late-night incident outside a town centre pub.

Craig Alexander Jones, of 50 Iscennen Road, became involved in a heated confrontation with another drinker outside the Old Cross public house on Quay Street during the early hours of October 2.

Ammanford magistrates were told how police officers on foot patrol in the town centre spotted the two men arguing and "squaring up".

The officers spoke to both men and urged them to walk away.

Jones initially appeared to accept the officers’ advice, but quickly returned to continue the confrontation.

When one of the officers took hold of Thomas arm, he was met with a torrent of abuse.

Thomas also threatened to head-butt the officer unless he was released.

Both officers were forced to restrain Thomas as he became ever more aggressive and abusive.

Peter Rhys Jones, defending, told the court that Thomas had mistakenly believed he was being grabbed by the second man rather than the police.

"He has since apologised to the officers concerned in person," said Mr Rhys Jones.

Mr Rhys Jones also told the court that following the incident, Thomas was made the subject of a three-month ban from all Ammanford public houses under the Behave or Be Banned scheme.

Magistrates granted Thomas a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered he pay £85 court costs.
