HUNDREDS of animals at an Amman Valley rescue centre face almost certain death after public donations dried up.
Volunteers at the South Wales Rescue Centre in Brynaman have already ploughed thousands of pounds of their personal savings into the project, but money has all but run out.
The centre, which has cared for thousands of abandoned pets over the past 15 years, is already turning away animals.
Now, heartbroken staff fear those which cannot be rehoused face being put to sleep.
“We have always been funded through donations, car boots sales and fetes,” said volunteer Caz Jones.
“But for the last 18 months our donations from the general public have dropped like a stone from between £120 and £180 each month to nothing.
“All our recent car boots and fetes have been a complete washout because of the weather and now we are on the brink of closing.
“All the volunteers have been bailing the rescue centre out with our own money for the past few months, but that just can’t go on.
“I have spent all my personal savings on the centre, and the same goes for all the other volunteers,” said Caz, who recently dipped into her own life savings to meet a £3,000 vets bill.
Caz and her team currently need to raise around £500 each week to cover costs.
They care for 24 rabbits, 14 guinea pigs, numerous gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, rats and budgies, three dogs, 14 cats, ferrets, two goats and nine rescue horses at the centre.
“All the volunteers are devastated,” said Caz.
“We simply have no idea what the future holds for the centre or the animals.
“It is not their fault that they have been left in that position but unless we can raise money soon I dread to think what will happen.”
