THE annual general meeting of the Ammanford Twinning Association will be held on Tuesday (November 17) in the Pensioners Hall at 8pm.
Ammanford Town Council initiated the twinning link by inviting members of different associations in the town to set up a Twinning Association in 1996.
This resulted in the signing of an official charter between the towns of Ammanford and Breuillet – a town of some 8,000 people around 30 km from the centre of Paris – in October 1997.
Each town hosts a visit by its twin town every other year. This is usually in the form of a long weekend, when a programme of activities is arranged.
Over the last 12 years lifelong friendships have been forged.
The twinners from Ammanford have been fortunate to have been taken to most of the main locations in and around the most romantic city in the world.
Parties have lunched at the Eiffel Tower, cruised down the Loire and visited Monet’s garden, the Palace of Versailles, and Chartres.
There has also been a visit to Ammanford by a party of 40 primary school children from Breuillet.
Ysgol Bro Banw have liaised with pupils in Breuillet as a result of the activities that surround the children’s charter.
The opportunity has been the inspiration for the ‘Clwb Ffraneg’ which meets on a weekly basis and is run by Mrs Odette Rees, a teacher at the school.
During the tenth anniversary celebrations our visitors from Breuillet presented Ammanford with a tapestry which had taken six women three months to complete.
May 2010 sees the next visit by the people of Breuillet.
All of the Twinning Association invite any individuals or families to make contact with the secretary, Mrs Miriam Phillips, on 01269 850870 and/or by attending the AGM on Tuesday.
