Fears of bridge fatality

COMMUNITY leaders in Llandeilo have urged Carmarthenshire Council to sort out the town’s Kings Bridge before someone is killed.

The landmark, known locally as the Swing Bridge, has been the victim of a recent spate of vandalism, and anxious town councillors fear it will be left in its sorry and unsafe state for the foreseeable future.

Gaping holes have been left on the side of the bridge and councillors fear that children playing close by could easily fall into the river.

“My worry is that we will have someone falling off the bridge and Llandeilo could have a fatality on its hands,” said Cllr Roy Davies.

PC Vernon Thomas told the council that officers were continuing to patrol the bridge on a regular basis. “I don’t understand what whoever has done this was thinking, but rest assured, we will be continuing our patrols,” he said.

Councillors were also anxious that the bridge was not smartened up by its centenary in 2011, but Cllr Ieuan Jones said he had already been putting pressure on the officials responsible for sprucing it up.

No one was available for comment from Carmarthen- shire council at the time of going to press.
