'Help us in fight on fly-tipping'

LETTERS have been sent to residents in a Gwendraeth Valley village asking for their help in the fight against fly-tipping.

Both Carmarthenshire County Council and Llannon Community Council have been inundated with complaints of rubbish being dumped in High Street in Tumble.

Large quantities of builders waste such as rubble, plasterboard and wood as well as an old bath has been fly-tipped in recent weeks. However, there has been a problem in the area during the last 12 months.

Council environmental enforcement officers are now investigating. A council spokeswoman said: “Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and anyone caught could be fined up to £50,000 and/or up to five years in prison.”

Letters have been sent out to householders to ask them for their help in catching those responsible and also reminding them of their duty of care when it comes to the removal of any household waste. Residents employing a tradesman to work on their home, garden or business premises, are responsible for making sure that anyone taking or handling their waste is licensed with the Environment Agency.

Their legal duty of care means they could face prosecution and a fine of up to £5,000 if their waste carrier is not registered and their rubbish is dumped illegally.
