SUPERMARKET Lidl could be on its way to Ammanford after plans were submitted for land next to the town’s police station.

The store would create around 25 jobs and, should county planners give the proposals the green light, it will open in Foundry Road next year.

The news is seen as another boost for the town and Cllr Hugh Evans said it showed Ammanford could still attract big-name chains.

“I think it’s great news and I’m absolutely delighted,” he said.

“It shows that Ammanford is still an attractive prospect for big companies and I hope others will see Lidl moving in and will follow suit. There’s also the creation of jobs in the area, which is a massive positive.”

Paul Ramsey, sales operations manager for Lidl, said the store’s plan for the town would be available to see at a public open day later this month and said staff would be on-hand to answer any concerns.

“People will be able to come and see what we’ve got planned and have their say on what we’re doing,” he said.

“We’re still quite a way off. We’ve got to get the planning, sort out contractors and agree a deal with the landowners so I don’t think we’ll be opening until sometime in 2010.

“There will be between 20 and 25 jobs available from the start and then we’ll assess how busy the store is before deciding whether to employ more staff. We’re really excited about the prospect of coming to Ammanford and are looking forward to meeting the residents to see what they have to say about plans.”

The open day will be on Friday, June 26 between 10am and 6pm at Ammanford Pensioners Hall.
