CWMAMAN residents have backed plans to demolish a former primary school to make way for bungalows.

Councillor Kevin Madge chaired a public meeting recently to discuss the future of Glanaman and Garnant primary schools, closed earlier this year to make way for the flagship Ysgol y Bedol superschool.

Carmarthenshire Council has submitted a planning application to convert Glanaman School into multiple dwellings.

There are two options for Garnant School. One is to convert the building into houses and sell off the adjoining land as plots.

The other is to demolish the building and sell off the whole site as plots.

Councillor Madge said scores of residents were invited to have their say at a public meeting held on Monday, November 7.

He said: "The villagers have supported the plans to develop bungalows on the Garnant site.

"They would not obstruct the view of the mountains and would have a community benefit.

"There is a shortage of housing in the Amman Valley so the development of these bungalows is regarded as a necessity."

However, councillor Madge said he does have slight reservations.

"My only concern is over who will be buying the land," he said.

"They will not be council-owned bungalows; the land is going to be sold off to a private developer.

"Who that will be is not yet known.

"But I do hope the developer will pay heed to the views of the communit," he added

Councillor Clive Scourfield, executive board member for regeneration, said: "Plans are at a very early stage and have not been finalised yet.

"All planning applications will be subject to consultation and people will have the opportunity to give their views on each one.

"These observations will be taken into account when the planning committee considers the applications," said Cllr Scourfield.
