Welsh Cup Preliminary Round Cwmaman Utd 2-1 Pontlottyn Blast Furnaces

CWMAMAN earned their first victory since being elevated to Welsh League status with a deserved win in the Welsh cup preliminary round against a side in their own division.

This gave the Cwm management a good barometer of the type of opponents they can expect over the coming season.

United had the better of early play, but fell behind rather against the run of play when Dean Randall slotted home to put Pontlottyn ahead.

Cwmaman battled away and created a handful of excellent openings, perhaps the best falling to Ceri Wheeler whose shot was well saved by Furnace keeper Andrew Diggle.

However, dangerman Wheeler plugged away and was rewarded with Cwmaman's deserved equaliser on 35 minutes which tied the score going in at half-time.

United kept up the good work at the start of the second-period, being encamped in the Pont half for large periods.

The second breakthrough duly arrived with pressure being borne by Cwm, Ceri Wheeler seizing his second goal on the 60-minute mark.

Cwmaman went close via Paul Jones and later also rattled the woodwork on several occasions.

The last ten minutes saw Blast Furnace throw everything except the kitchen sink at the Cwm defence in a bid to grab the equaliser, but Cwmaman held on to go through.

Match sponsors were "Knead the Dough Bakers", Llandeilo, and Match-ball sponsors were Manford House takeaway, Glanaman.

This Saturday (August 31), Cwmaman United are away at Skewen in the League. Cwmaman Second XI were also in action at the weekend.

They earned a comprehensive 9-0 'friendly' victory away at Waterloo Wanderers. Cerith Jones (3), Jason Griffiths (2), Nathan McNeill (2), Ian Fender and Nick Watkins got the goals.
