A DECISION on whether to grant permission for a controversial Llandeilo housing development has been put back pending a site meeting.

Plans have been submitted for a 20-house residential unit at the former Cawdor Motors site in Ffairfach but Carmarthenshire Council has delayed its decision on the future of the site, which has been earmarked for housing association properties, to allow for a site meeting to take place.

Residents and councillors are against the plan claiming it would have a detrimental effect on the fabric of the village.

County councillor for Llandeilo Ieuan Jones said: "This is not a designated housing site. The dwellings proposed are not acceptable to the village location and would cause an overcrowding of the site. There is no need for socio-economic housing in the area."

Dyffryn Cennen Community Council also objected, claiming that there is no call for such a large development in the village as the community already provides more than its quota of social housing.

The initial proposal included 23 two and three storey houses. However, the council has since received amended plans which have reduced the number of units to 20 - all of which will be a maximum of two storeys.

The planned site would consist of five four-bedroomed properties, 12 three-bedroomed and three two-bedroomed homes.

It is understood a housing association has approached the council with a view to developing affordable housing on the land under the Social Housing Grant Programme.

Approval would anger locals who don't feel there is a housing problem in the area and would consider a development unacceptable.
