CONTINENTAL market stalls are coming to Ammanford.

French, German, Italian and Spanish goods will bring a flavour of Europe to the town.

The first stalls are expected in March and hopefully will return every three months.

Carmarthenshire Council are also in talks to attract a 'fair trade' market. Foreign traders selling crepes, cheeses, wines, wallets and fancy goods have already attracted big crowds to Llanelli and Carmarthen markets.

Fruit, meats, leather and craft stalls lined the streets as part of a Christmas shopping boost.

Now plans are forging ahead for European traders to visit Ammanford. Town mayor Ray Spencer has welcomed the news.

She said: "The fact that the town is twinned with Breuillet, near Paris, will make for an added interest when a French example is introduced.

"It will bring more people into the town, so that other businesses may benefit from the experience.

"I wish those who participate well and I hope that the people who visit Ammanford enjoy what has been laid on for them."

The council's regeneration and leisure executive board member, Councillor Clive Scourfield, said: "Continental markets are very popular across the UK.

"The French market in Llanelli was a big hit and we are building on that across the county."

The move comes as a huge new events programme is being put together in Carmarthenshire.

The programme includes festivals, live shows, markets, sporting competitions and carnivals.

Councillor Scourfield added: "The council is committed to providing better events and entertainment for residents and visitors to Carmarthenshire."
